Purpose
This document describes only the handling of the TA522 adapter for CR2450 battery. Refer to TA521 documentation for all information about handling a buffer primary lithium battery.
In general the AC500 devices are supplied without primary cells. In case a primary lithium battery is desired (e.g. for SRAM storage and RTC buffering while the processor module is not powered) order one of the following accessories:

TA521: primary lithium battery. It is the accessory to be assembled directly in the primary battery compartment. TA521 is mandatory in case of using a AC500 processor module with XC variant. Note that TA521 is delivered with a CR2450 primary lithium battery. Refer to TA521 documentation for more information.

TA522: adapter for CR2450 battery. It is the accessory for a more comfortable assembly and replacement of a CR2450 primary lithium battery. Note that the adapter for CR2450 battery is offered and delivered without a CR2450 primary lithium battery (not to be ordered at ABB).
The following CR2450 primary lithium battery have been tested and are recommended in combination with the TA522 adapter:

CAUTION

Do not use unapproved primary lithium battery, it can cause data loss.
The CPU monitors the discharge degree of the primary battery. A warning is issued before the primary lithium battery condition becomes critical (about 2 weeks before). Once the warning message appears, the primary lithium battery should be replaced as soon as possible.
After installation of the adapter for CR2450 battery, make sure that the primary lithium battery is correctly recognized by the device. In the Automation Builder under “CPU Parameters” -> “Check battery”. Activate that the value is set to “ON” and no primary lithium battery error is displayed on the device (Warning E4).
Handling instructions

Do not short-circuit or re-charge the primary lithium battery! It can cause excessive heating and explosion.

Replace the primary lithium battery with supply voltage ON in order not to risk data being lost.

Dispose of the adapter for battery in accordance with local regulations. (Note: Product contains nickel-plated stainless steel sheet, copper wires, plastics)

Recycle exhausted primary lithium battery meeting the environmental standards.
Primary lithium battery lifetime
The primary lithium battery lifetime is the time the primary lithium battery can store data while the processor module is not powered. As long as the processor module is powered, the primary lithium battery will only be discharged by its own leakage current.
To avoid a short primary lithium battery discharge, the primary lithium battery should always be inserted or replaced while the processor module is under power, then the primary lithium battery is correctly recognized and will not shortly discharged.
Insertion
To ensure proper operation and to prevent data loss, the primary lithium battery insertion or replacement must be always done with the system under power. Data buffering is not possible without the primary lithium battery and power supply at the same time.




WARNING

Risk of fire or explosion!
Use of incorrect primary lithium battery may cause fire or explosion.

Open the primary lithium battery compartment with the small locking mechanism (press direction as arrow shows), press it down and slip down the door. The door is attached to the front panel of the processor module and cannot be removed.

Remove the TA522 adapter from its package and insert the primary lithium battery (type CR2450) into the TA522 adapter.

Observe the correct polarity according to the markings on the TA522 adapter and the primary lithium battery itself.

Insert the primary lithium battery connector into the small connector port of the compartment. The connector is keyed to find the correct polarity (red = positive pole = above).

Insert the TA522 adapter for CR2450 battery into the compartment and push it until it reaches the bottom of the compartment.

Arrange the cable in a way that allows the cover to close.

Pull-up the door and press until the locking mechanism snaps.
In order to prevent data losses or problems, the primary lithium battery should be replaced after 3 years of utilisation or at least as soon as possible after receiving the "low primary lithium battery warning" indication.
Do not use a primary lithium battery older than 3 years for replacement, do not keep primary lithium battery too long in stock.
To display the primary lithium battery load capacity, use the PLC Shell command “Batt”.
Replacement of the primary lithium battery
To ensure proper operation and to prevent data loss, the primary lithium battery insertion or replacement must be always done with the system under power. Data buffering is not possible without the primary lithium battery and power supply at the same time.

Open the primary lithium battery compartment with the small locking mechanism, press it down and slip down the door. The door is attached to the front panel of the processor module and cannot be removed.

Remove the old TA521 primary lithium battery or the TA522 adapter from the primary lithium battery compartment. Remove then the small connector from the socket with a screwdriver. Try to avoid pulling it by the cable.

Push the old primary lithium battery out of the TA522 adapter for CR2450 battery using a screwdriver.

Replace the primary lithium battery type CR2450.

Follow the previous instructions to insert a new primary lithium battery ⮫ “Insertion”.




CAUTION

Risk of explosion!
Do not open, re-charge or disassemble primary lithium battery. Attempting to charge primary lithium battery will lead to overheating and can cause explosions.
Protect them from heat and fire and store them in a dry place.
Never short-circuit or operate primary lithium battery with the polarities reversed. The primary lithium battery are likely to overheat and explode. Avoid unintentional short circuiting do not store primary lithium batteries in metal containers and do not place them on metallic surfaces. Escaping lithium is a health hazard.
