DNP3 protocol is an install and licensed option for the AC500 V3 and AC500-eCo V3 Pro CPUs to be used as an outstation, where AC500 IO and variables can be mapped to objects as defined per the DNP3 standard (IEEE 1815-2012).
This enables standardized, function rich still efficient data exchange between AC500 and DNP3 masters like SCADA via data-rate and availability limited typically remote communication channels.
AC500 supports the DNP3 profiles up to the highest Level 4, which includes practically all object groups and their variations including file transfer and secure authentication and it can communicate with multiple masters in parallel, which can have shared or separate object databases.

Typically, DNP3 (or IEC60870) is used for communication to enable automation and digitalization in distributed infrastructure applications like e.g., water distribution and collection networks, oil- and gas pipelines, spread-out electrification or road / rail infrastructure.
